Established in New Zealand in 2009, the CAA Part 145 Organisation provides Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Services for private, charter, and corporate aircraft owners. Avcraft has a reputation for excellence in aircraft maintenance and exceptional customer service, and strives to improve further with every year. This year has been rather unusual for obvious reasons. Fortunately Avcraft was one of the few organisations able to operate continuously through lockdown and emerged in great shape A significant portion of the last two years has been devoted to the development and modification of various Air Tractor aircraft models with the design and installation of computer-controlled dispersal systems and advanced cockpit avionics resulting in one of the most capable agricultural aircraft in the world. 2020 has been a busy year with the Air Tractor project continuing in parallel with multiple design and modification projects, along with scheduled maintenance and avionics installations, and a large number of aircraft imports and Certificates of Airworthiness. The last 12 months have seen a number of Cirrus SR22s, Air Tractors, and many other aircraft placed on the New Zealand Register. The Maintenance Control and Technical Records Team, led by Jacqui Lees, has doubled in size and provides maintenance control and support for many operators, from single private aircraft and Part 135 Operators to Part 125 Airlines. A sophisticated cloud-based maintenance tracking software package is at the heart of Avcraft’s operation, and enables them to provide efficient, error free, real-time maintenance tracking and planning The Avionics team, lead by Aaron McLeod, has been busier than ever with back-to-back Garmin and Aspen flight deck installations as well as multiple auto-pilot, transponder and radio installations. These cutting edge avionics systems enhance situational awareness and transform any aircraft into a capable and modern platform enabling the pilots to focus on, and enjoy their flight time. The avionics team is your point of call for any issues, providing New Zealand wide 24/7 support at their Feilding Facility, on site at yours, or even technical support over the phone. Representing all major manufacturers, and many new and emerging manufacturers, Avcraft have countless options to suit your requirements and budget. With many of the systems available for viewing or even flight testing, contact the Avionics Team to discuss your options, or drop in and try the systems for yourself Earlier this year Avcraft purchased Aviation Radio Ltd., New Zealand’s oldest Part 145 Avionics Provider. This acquisition has enhanced the capabilities of both organisations, with bench repair and testing of avionics components, installation and scheduled testing at the core of Aviation Radio’s business. Capably managed by Nick Wisnewski, Aviation Radio Ltd. continues to operate as a separate entity providing the exceptional service and quality they are renowned for. Thanks for talking with us Tony. Are you acquiring and refurbishing aircraft for resale, or are all of the projects customer driven, or is there a mixture of both happening? We definitely see a good mix come into the hangar. Many projects are from customers who want to add functionality to their existing aircraft or have recently acquired a helicopter and require refurbishments or upgrades to suit their mission type. On the other hand, off the back of a new fleet management partnership with Air Methods in the USA alongside our sister company Heli-Parts Nevada (HPN), we have just acquired the first of many Airbus helicopters from the EMS operator. These will come through our hangar for reconfiguration and refurbishment and will then be sold on the local or international market. Oceania is an international company with a presence in several countries. How much of the work in the Projects work is international business? I would estimate a 60/40 split of international to local helicopter projects. The majority of aircraft that go through customisation and completion for sale tend to go overseas, given the larger size of the international market! There’s always a wide variety of aircraft coming and going from your hangar, including some very heavy types. What’s your current scope of capabilities across different types and models? Our Part 145 scope that we can work on is fairly broad. In terms of OEMs, we do specialise in Airbus as well as Bell and MD aircraft projects, although we’re certainly not limited to these aircraft types. One of the larger projects that we recently completed was a Sikorsky S-76B. Oceania Aviation occupies substantial premises at both entrances to Auckland’s Ardmore Airport, covering a range of helicopter and fixed wing services across multiple hangars and workshops. One of these bookends, at the Hamlin Road entrance, contains the company’s Helicopter Projects Hangar. KiwiFlyer recently spoke with Hangar Manager Tony Riley to find out more. 2020 has been a disruptive year for everyone. How has COVID-19 impacted the helicopter projects business locally and internationally? There has definitely been an impact on the demand for projects, due to operators delaying or reducing their spend where possible. However, we also carry out a wide range of helicopter maintenance within the hangar and we did manage to secure what was considered an ‘Essential’ aircraft maintenance project during NZ’s lockdown period. Luckily for our team, maintenance work has continued to keep us busy when we have seen less demand for projects work (either due to lockdown restrictions or industry impacts). There’s a BO105 and an EC120 in the hangar at the moment. What’s happening with those? Our Projects Hangar is certainly very busy at the moment. We have two BO-105 projects on the go, which will be exported to Russia upon completion. We are also just completing the final touches of an EC-120B post 12-year inspection and new interior fitout, which is currently for sale. Additionally, we have an AS350B3+ going through its 12-year inspection process and de-mod / export C of A. This has to be an interesting area of the industry to be involved with. Tell us about any unusual or different projects in recent times, how they came about, and where the aircraft are working now? Yes, it’s a great industry to be in with no single project being the same. The recent S-76B proved a great challenge, starting with translating the Japanese logbooks! We carried out the 3000hr/5 year inspection and fitted out the interior with new leather seats and interior trim (partnering with National Aircraft Interiors). It was extremely rewarding getting to fly the end result. We do treat every project with the same enthusiasm no matter how small or large! What sort of work are you seeking from New Zealand customers and who should they contact with enquiries? Our Helicopter Projects hangar specialises in projects across most turbine powered rotorcraft types, as well as all levels of helicopter maintenance. Feel free to get in touch with me anytime to discuss your upcoming project or refurbishment of your helicopter; we are essentially a one-stop-shop that has in-house MRO services across everything from component overhaul, to main and tail rotor repairs and re-paint, through to any kind of avionics upgrades and full refurbishment and paint. The Ardmore Airport based workshop, which specialises in the servicing, overhaul and repair of Rolls Royce 250 series engines and components, has seen a number of changes in 2020. From the impact of COVID-19 on their customers and operations, to the promotion of the highly experienced and well-respected Chris Hutchings as their new Turbines Manager, to a temporary pause on operations whilst the team worked through a review of their internal structure and processes – the team has been very busy. The workshop is now seeing a welcome surge in customer demand, thanks to increased activity in the local aviation industry and continued loyal customer support. Services and scope Oceania Aviation’s Turbine Division covers the full scope of aftermarket support for all Rolls Royce M250 series II and IV turboshaft engines. Their services include inspection, overhaul, repair, NDT, leasing, exchange and sales of modules as well as individual components and accessories. The Turbines team, who include six specialist trained engineers, offer full overhaul and inspection services across the C20 & C20R, C30 & C47 engine modules. Long-term customer relationships The workshop is regarded as New Zealand’s leading provider of Rolls Royce turbine services, with a reputation for providing tailored, technical solutions for its loyal customer base across New Zealand and globally. The Turbines Division team’s focus is on building long-term relationships with each and every customer, providing a level of trust and collaboration that sets the business apart from its competitors. “Each Turbines customer varies in terms of their mission type, payload, hours flown, workload and other circumstances. These differences mean that when assessing and commencing a customer job, it is important for the team to provide a highly customised solution that will meet the individual requirements presented,” says Turbines Manager Chris Hutchings, who took over the role in July this year. “It is our flexibility in meeting specific customer demand that provides the Oceania difference!”. Trust, Price and Efficiency The Turbines team outlines three main pillars that underpin their unique service: Trust, Pricing and Efficiency. They pride themselves on being absolutely transparent from the get-go – all costs are broken down and discussed with the customer, and communication is key if anything changes throughout a job. Oceania provides quote pricing at three levels for replacement parts and components – factory-new OEM, parts manufacturer approval (PMA), or part-life options (OHC). Often the customer will choose a combination of these options, depending on their needs and the solution that they are most comfortable with. Timing is obviously also key to minimise AOG for Oceania Aviation is recognised as an industry leader in General Aviation sales & support. Often part-life (OHC) and PMA parts can provide a much shorter turnaround time than new OEM, allowing the operator to get in the air again much faster. This can also be facilitated by using the workshop’s loan and exchange pool of components, although this year has proven challenging in terms of procuring new parts for these assets from the manufacturer – something the team is working hard to mitigate. Looking ahead “Right now, we are just laser focused on continuing to build trust and solidify our partnerships with our local and global customer base,” says Chris. “It is our reputation for total customer satisfaction that will allow us to keep expanding this customer base and form further sustainable partnerships with new customers as we grow.” Yuri Vorontsov (LAME) assembling a C20B turbine.Disassembly of a C20B turbine for overhaul.
