< PreviousKiwiFlyer Magazine Issue 71 50 2020 has been another busy and interesting year for Central Aero Engineering at Hamilton. Two years ago the company moved into, and now occupies the majority of, the SuperAir hangar at the entrance to Hamilton Airport. That move has been well validated in 2020 with the hangar frequently full of a wide variety of day to day maintenance and interesting project work. Most of this work is managed in the capable hands of Chief Engineer Stephen Grainger and his team, allowing company owner Paul Waterhouse to spend time on growing the consultancy side of the business and supporting clients seeking help with “all things aviation, including managing regulatory requirements”. Typical work through the hangar in 2020 has involved regular routine maintenance on types such as BO105s, AS240, B206, R44, FU24, Crescos, Air Tractor 502, Pawnee 260, and more. Central Aero is microlight and recreational friendly as well and sees various home-builts (both fixed wing and rotary) in for annuals and other support on a regular basis, as well as the same for hot air balloons and gliders. Support is also provided to owner/builders when time comes for initial CAA inspection and registration requirements. A particularly interesting project during the year has involved translating manuals and preparing CAA documents for a Hungarian Gowron which Paul describes as a “proper” aircraft Hamilton’s Central Aero Engineering covers the maintenance spectrum with a big radial and a tailwheel. Maintenance control is provided for a variety of local Waikato operators, as well as a “logbook fixing” service for private operators who need assistance from time to time. Central Aero’s approach is one of ‘Delivering fair value’. It’s an approach that draws commercial and private operators, and a regular stream of home builders and microlight aircraft owners needing advice from time to time. “We’ll always try to help,” says Paul. “If you own it, or fly it, no matter what it is, from hot air balloons, to twins and helicopters, piston engines and turbines, give us a call for any advice or support you need.” Services and Capabilities Central Aero’s services cover everything from pre-purchase inspections worldwide, shipping handling, CoA preparation and issue, airworthiness reviews, maintenance, repair and restoration of all flying machines, 24 month avionics checks, dynamic prop balancing, weight and balance services, maintenance control for private and air transport operators, accident and incident investigation, parts and materials supply, and builder support. Paul is also willing to provide support to trainee engineers sitting their exams, particularly from the point of view of covering legislation and how logbook entries should be made. “We can help explain what is being achieved with correct logbook completion and what they should be looking for,” says Paul. Recently in the hangar Amongst other routine maintenance tasks, interesting aircraft presently in the hangar include a Cresco for an air conditioning installation, a Cirrus glider receiving annuals and 24 month avionics checks, and an Air Tractor 502 on a 300 hour check. Upcoming work includes the usual regular stream of rotorcraft (comprising around a third of the company’s work) and some interesting recreational projects. Central Aero Electrical was founded by Martin Ross in 2008. In 2019 Martin’s son Hamish took over as CEO of the company. Hamish is a LAME who has several years of aircraft servicing experience and of repair and overhaul of electrical components, including mechanical actuators and ‘running a company with an emphasis on service’. Hamish has expanded the company’s capabilities especially on starter generator overhauls from 150 to 400 amp models of three main manufacturers, by utilising his overseas experience to develop business relationships with many overseas companies which has also yielded improvements to workshop practices and quality systems. Talking about the variety of work evident on workbenches, Martin says, “we’re handy people – we’re good at twisting our minds around unusual problems and designs”. There are many occasions on the books where components that might normally have been replaced, have instead been repaired (at considerable cost saving), delivering satisfaction to the Central Aero team and also the customer. And if they don’t already have an answer, the team’s connections can usually help. Central Aero Electrical has a comprehensive range of diagnostic equipment and a large test bench that will handle up to 12 cylinder magnetos. Capabilities cover a good range of starter/ Central Aero Electrical exchange components Central Aero Electrical solve all kinds of problems generator, control unit rectification and overhaul work, along with 500 hour magneto inspections (usually completed with a one to two day turnaround). Mechanical actuator overhauls for various rotary and fixed wing types are also a regular job. Lately a lot of starter/ generator work has passed through the business, from helicopters through to Saab 340s. Dimmer control and EPO box (engine power out) test equipment is also to hand. A recent addition to the equipment list is a balancing machine utilised for dynamic balancing of armatures for optimal performance of each generator and electric motor. This dynamic balancer has very high accuracy and can be used for armatures and rotating machinery of many different sizes. Numerous exchange items are available, and Central Aero Electrical also stock a variety of parts for re-sale including starters, batteries, alternators, strobe units, starter/generators, GCUs, voltage regulators, ignition switches, and HT ignition harnesses. In many cases the company is able to deal directly with a component supplier, thus bypassing the aircraft manufacturer’s mark-up which they are happy to pass on as a saving to the customer. Designed and manufactured by Neil Hintz, the company produces a wide range of gearboxes to suit different applications, supplying these to home- builders and to OEM manufacturers such as Titan Aircraft in the USA. There are also fabrication and engine development arms to the business. Geared Reduction Drives In production for 20 years now, Autoflight geared reduction drives include output shaft offset up or down options specifically for Subaru EA, EJ and H6 series engines. A universal unit can be readily adapted to any engine up to 160hp. Mazda RX8 Renasis and 13B engines can also be accommodated as well as the Rotomax, Suzuki and Honda V6s. There’s also a 600 hp capable unit designed as part of a V8 installation. Extensive fabrication capabilities The Autoflight workshop includes a 4 axis CNC machining centre (with a dimensional capability of 850x500x500mm) and CNC lathe, manual lathes and mills, a cylindrical grinder for grinding hard shafts, tube bending and tig welding equipment, plus much more. Capabilities also include complicated patternmaking and casting. However if something can’t be made in house, then Neil can probably arrange it through his wide network of engineering contacts – including for hard chroming, nikasil treatments, gear hobbing and more. Home builders who need something special may well find a solution with support from Neil. Dominator Autogyros Autoflight are the NZ agents for Dominator autogyros. Neil has fabricated numerous tandem and single seat gyros, powered with a variety of engines according to customer preference. Subaru variants are favoured, many being optioned with Neil’s own dual ignition heads, tuned manifolds, and fuel injection systems. Aside from being very cost competitive even when fully optioned, there are substantial long term savings to be had given they run on-condition and when overhaul is required, costs are comparable to a standard automotive recondition. The Dominator gyro design has long been favoured by those interested in autogyro principles of flight, nearly all aspects of the design having been specifically developed with dynamic stability, rough field operations (including crash worthiness), and light, sporty handling characteristics all front of mind. They are also a design that can be readily produced from either a kit from Neil (starting at $15000 for a single seat version without an engine), or supplied ready-to- fly. And a made-in-NZ tandem Dominator costs only around half the price of some of the currently available European gyro offerings. Fully completed costs (single seat) can be as low as $25000, again depending on options and how much work the owner chooses to do their self. Dominator gyros are very safe and very easy to fly, and they will out-manoeuvre most others out there. This is indeed a very inexpensive and fun way to fly. She got off to a pretty normal start for the team at JEM Aviation with plenty on. Barely back from Christmas holidays and CAA were on our doorstep to carry out the NZ C of A on Yak-3U ‘Steadfast’. Once issued, previous owner James Crockett (who flew her at Classic Fighters 2017) carried out the five hours of test flying in quick order. While here he rated Ryan Southam so that the new owners could also be rated in due course. The Yak-3U is certainly an impressive addition to the local scene and makes a worthy partner to Yak-3M ‘Full Noise’ – we just need to get the two of them up together for a bit of a joust! January also saw the completion and test running of the second Pobjoy Niagara engine for Roy Fox in Australia. This engine was completed as a spare for the Comper Swift which returned to Australia in 2018. It was very satisfying to return it to Australia, along with the vast cache of spares that had been taking up substantial room in the hangar. February saw us support Full Noise in her bid to set a NZ speed record, fittingly at the Bert Munro Speed Week in Invercargill. It was a great weekend away although the weather certainly made things challenging. Luckily our engineering services were not required and she went on to set a FAI certified record of 559 km/h for the under 3000 kg class. February also saw the completion of the 5-hour test flying programme on the Warbirds F2b Bristol Fighter, ZK-PRK. Some annoying niggles and cantankerous weather saw things drag out a bit longer than we would have liked, but at the beginning of March Ryan made a very long flight to deliver her to her new home at Ardmore, and very well received she was! With annual inspections and general repair work taking precedence, the boss made the decision in early March to take the lower wings for the WACO Project home so that he could actually get some time in and get them covered. That was somewhat of a fortunate thing as two weeks later we all went into lockdown. Being a non-essential business, all JEM staff had the seven weeks off and Jay was able to make good use of the time and get the lower wings mostly covered (in between family duties!). We have been lucky in that lockdown has so far proved to be just an enforced interlude for JEM Aviation. While expecting things to at least slow down or even stop, as soon as we moved to Level 3 things were pretty much back to normal. We were equally as lucky in that our workload did not seem to be too manic and we just got on with things. As with many companies, freight issues have been perhaps the biggest dilemma, but having said that most freight, both international and national gets to us in a timely manner. ADS-B installs have started increasing and in conjunction with Sounds Aero Maintenance carrying out the final inspection and testing we have been carrying out on average 2 installs a month. Not startling install rates, but constant enough. We could be installing more, but most of our Special Category aircraft owners are hanging out to see if CAA will allow the installation of non-TSOed GSP sources which will bring the install costs down significantly for many of these owners. Lockdown slowed progress on the painting and assembly of RV-10 ZK- RMA, but we eventually got her airborne in August. Ryan Southam once again carried out the 25 hours test flying on this machine. The plethora of avionics onboard gave a few headaches here and there, not helped by the fact that she had been wired in the UK and there were no wiring diagrams available. This is certainly a great looking machine with performance to match! She is now resident in Masterton. July saw the first application of the Stewart Systems ‘paint system’ to the WACO wings and other components. We decided to use this so we could more accurately advise customers on the different covering systems available. To date we have loved the system, particularly the adhesive and the base coats are also nice to use. However, since August we have been struggling with the final colour coat and after 28 test panels still cannot Yak-7B in progress. Test flying the RV-10. Conservation work on the late John Smith’s Mosquito. F2b Bristol Fighter flew to NZ Warbirds at Ardmore.55 2020 #5 get a satisfactory finish… We have a few more things try as I write this, but suffice to say motivation has taken a bit of a dive. We had been hoping to have her completed for Classic Fighters 2021 as we have recently taken procession of a low time W670 and the beautifully overhauled Curtiss Reed propeller. Work has continued on long term projects including the Fairchild F-45, Jungmann, Yak-7 and Yak-9. Both Yak projects are benefitting from being alongside one another in the hangar with R&D time being shared between the two. The Yak-7B has turned into a complete rebuild and the bones of it are now sorted out with detail work starting to take place. Engineering data for the engine mounts has just about been finalised and we should be able to start getting engines installed in the New Year. Staff numbers are now at good level with Gavin Conroy coming on board at the start of the New Year. We also have a couple of good keen NMIT students who come in whenever they can and ably assist with annual inspections. Also joining the team after a long RNZAF career is Daniel Sloan. His Air Force training is a great addition and brings a different point of view to GA maintenance. Although not strictly a JEM Aviation project, we are excited and proud to be involved in the conservation of John Smith’s Mosquito. Many JEM Aviation staff volunteered much of their own time in the initial stages of the project to get the aircraft dismantled and ready for transport to Omaka. On arrival at Omaka, Gavin Conroy has basically been Al Marshall’s right-hand man in getting the aircraft prepared for display. Marty Nicholl has also contributed greatly to the final painting. As 2020 draws to a close we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff for their efforts through the year, and all of our customers for their continued and valued custom, particularly in the midst of unprecedented upheaval this year. John Harwood from Blue Skies Aviation, who is also an instructor at the club, acquired this Aviat Husky which will join the other club aircraft on the line. Kapiti Districts Aero Club provides fixed wing and helicopter pilot training. Located near Paraparaumu, theirs is an ideal base for students and experienced pilots. They offer a diverse range of aircraft for basic and advanced flight training including single-engine IFR. Currently on the line are two Cessna 172s, a Cessna182, five Cessna 152s, a Tomahawk and a very new Cabri helicopter. And now an Aviat Husky which is described as a 21st century Piper Cub. This tandem two-seat, high- wing, utility light aircraft was built by Aviat Aircraft of Afton, Wyoming in 2011 and imported from Oklahoma with 354 hours on the Hobbs to date. The Husky features a spacious cockpit including Garmin avionics. The structure is of steel tube frames covered with Dacron. The wings have metal leading edges and are fitted with vortex generators to slightly lessen the stall speed. Bush tyres are fitted and power is supplied by a relatively powerful (for the Husky’s weight) 180 hp Lycoming O-360 engine turning a composite 3 blade MT propeller with a constant speed unit attached. The Husky’s high power-to-weight ratio and low wing loading result in good short- field performance. These are claimed to be America’s favourite tail-dragger aircraft. John said at this stage he will be the primary instructor and then will train others up as time allows. He expects the Husky will be a real asset to the Kapiti Club. When I was talking to John NZCAA was there completing their inspection so by time of print the aircraft will already be on the flight line. ZK-JSK British Aerospace Jetstream Origin Air Limited of Nelson recently purchased a Jetstream from an operator in Iceland. It was quite an accomplishment to have the ferry flight completed during the time of Covid. Upon arrival in Auckland, JSK proceeded to Palmerston North and into the Fieldair hangar for an interior update and application of their paint scheme etc. prior to commencing operations here. JSK joins Jetstream 31, JSH on their scheduled services between Nelson, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Wellington. Both aircraft are well suited to the routes they service given their size, speed and passenger comfort. Most of Origin Air’s shorter flights are at about 11000 to 12000 feet and the slightly longer sectors, up to FL160 (16000’). Many of their routes are quite scenic and the cabin affords excellent views. Origin Air pilot Murray Vincent says he is certainly enjoying flying the Jetstream, particularly the closeness and personal contact that they can achieve with an aircraft of this size and the opportunity of meeting regular travellers. The company has a very loyal clientele. With their Jetstream, British Aerospace have made a very robust, efficient aeroplane with good passenger appeal. They are well suited for Origin Air’s “point to point” flying and following a long association with New Zealand regional airlines, have proven their value in this type of market. However it turned out this fuselage was not in a very good state so most of it was replaced and modified - one of those mods incorporated the heavy duty bush plane under carriage. The fuselage is built using chrome moly tubing and covered with ceconite fabric and a fiberglass/carbon fibre belly pod was added. We are an umbrella group representing the interests of the owners of many unique aircraft and have a focus on the operation and display of these aircraft. If you have an interest in history, heritage and aircraft, NZ Warbirds may be for you. We have a continuing requirement for volunteers to assist with our Visitors Centre, aircraft hangar, model displays and general activities. If you need an excuse to ‘get out of the house’ (guys and girls) we would love to hear from you.
