The 37-foot wings are also covered in ceconite fabric and the ribs are riveted. The wing tips are made of carbon fibre. The complete aircraft is painted with nitrate dope, one brush coat and two sprayed coats then finished with a wax polish. Mark said his son Max helped him build and cover the wings which was the part of the construction that he liked the best. ZK-MMJ is fitted with a 160 hp Lycoming O-320 engine and at the start of the testing period was fitted with a fine 82/42 McCauley Borer Propeller but at 5 hours in, Mark changed this to a 74/58 Sensenich Propeller which has a better cruise speed and achieves reasonable take- off performance figures. So far Mark has completed 10 hours of testing achieving a take-off speed of 28 kts, a stall speed of 25 kts with minimum weight and a cruise speed of around 80 kts. The cockpit has great visibility and a com- fortable flying position. The instrument panel contains a mix of traditional and modern gauges with an iPad in the middle. Once Mark has completed the 40 hour test period, he will set about getting his C-Cat instructors rating back so that he can teach his son to fly the family plane. ZK-MWB Pazmany PL-9 Stork Murray Belfield has had a lifelong passion for building planes, starting back in his youth building models until his mid-teens and then onto full scale planes including his own Jodel D11 plus assisting with other projects. Then about nine years ago and being semi-retired, he decided to build a Pazmany PL-9 - a high-wing monoplane designed by Ladislao Pazmany as a three quarter scale variant of the WWII era Fieseler Storch. The original German Luftwaffe Fieseler F-156 Storch was an outstanding WWII airplane, designed to take off and land in extremely short distances. According to flight test results quoted by the Chief Aerodynamicist of the Fieseler Company the Storch had a take-off ground roll of 131 feet and a landing roll of 36 feet with 13 miles per hour head wind. The Pazmany PL-9 Stork is a three quarter replica but not a look-alike and was designed to have the same flying and handling characteristics of the original German aircraft. Murray said that this project is not for the faint hearted as there were 800 square feet of complicated but beautifully detailed plans involved. The fuselage frame is constructed of 4130 tubing and the wings are aluminium - mostly 6061-T6 and 2024-T3 bar stock included in the spars. All through the build Murray was making up jigs and patterns and moulds to assist with the making of the next component, also teaching himself to tig weld along the way. The wings have Fowler flaperons attached with leading edge slots and fibreglass tips. Murray says there are 100 feet of fairings on this aircraft, including the struts and undercarriage. The plane is covered in Stits polyfiber fabric and then painted up with the same camouflage colour scheme as the original German Luftwaffe Storch. The engine for this plane is a O-320 B2C Lycoming rated at 160 hp but when Murray stripped it down for NDT inspection he found that it had high compression pistons so it’s more like 180 hp. It turns a wooden Aviation Performance Propellers (Gary Williams) 76”x 44 pitch propeller. So how does it fly? Murray says it is very interesting; “It turned out better than I expected. Even with lots of weight on the tail it pops up on the take-off roll quite quickly and climbs away well. She comes in real slow, gracefully coming down then with a bit of a snort on the throttle rounds out beautifully.” Murray says it is also very stable in the side slip; “It doesn’t do anything in a hurry, it just pleases itself.” Murray has done six hours of testing at time of writing and is enjoying getting to know his plane.
